Wow! What are all those colors?!

I think we can all agree that the world of hair color has gotten a lot brighter these days. It’s not a surprise to see someone looking like Rainbow Bright walking down the street anymore. I get questions on a regular basis about these colors so I thought I’d sit down and throw out an FAQ.

What’s the process to get Vivid colors?

This question requires a little bit of depth. Different colors require different starting places. When people think about fashion colors, they generally jump straight to pink or lilac. A light color like these requires lightening the natural hair to a pale yellow.  To do a deep violet or blue, all that’s required is a hair color lighter than the target color. A light brunette, for example, could have a few pops of color with no lightening involved.

How long do Vivid colors last?

The answer to this is incredibly subjective. The answer I give to this question is generally a list of my own questions. How often do you shampoo your hair? At what temperature do you shampoo your hair? Does your hair ever encounter chlorine? What kind of shampoo and conditioner do you use? All of these things go far into your hair color’s decision to stay around or head for the hills. Basically, depending on care, your color can stick around anywhere from a week to 3 months.

What’s the process to touch up Vivid colors?

Basically the exact same process that it takes to get them in the first place. If you have placements of color, which I tend to recommend, you can skip the lightening process for a couple of visits and just reapply your bright color. If you are a bit bolder and go for an all over bright color, a bleach retouch and color application is required.
